Plumbing and other fears

Sometimes I wish I had the nerve to take things like my toilet apart to find out what is wrong.

When we first moved in, our toilet ran all the time. So I went to the Home Depot and bought a pump, and I was going to have my husband put it in. Well, one night, he wasn't home, and I couldn't take the constant running, so I tried to do it myself. Everything was going smoothly, and I was doing it all by my lonesome….until something happened and water was spraying out of something all over the place. So my husband, who was luckily nearby, had to come home to stop the spraying water and finish the job.

Now our toilet is running again, even with the 4 year old pump. Not nearly as much or as often, but it is starting again. I took the lid off the tank, took a look around, and everything looks in good shape. I checked for visible leaks. None. So, I don't know what it is.

And I just wish I had the nerve to rip apart the toilet and try to figure it out. Also, I wish we had a second toilet so that if I ruined the other one, I would have someplace to go to the bathroom. You know, a minor necessity.

Is the toilet the kind with a metal arm and a floating bulb attached? If so, bend the arm so the bulb is lower into the water. The bulb is a float and if the water level doesn't go high enough it won't shut off the refill of the tank because the water will just go down the overflow.
